Diamond Term Explanation
- A plane, polished surface of a diamond. The brilliant, a full cut round diamond usually contains 58 facets.
- Some cutters also polish the girdle for maximal reflection, into 32 facets for a round diamond.
- A diamond with another shape than round cut (ie. princess, emerald, oval, etc.) and/or with an attractive natural body color other than light yellow or light brown.
- A separation or break due to either cleavage or fracture, often white and feathery in appearance.
- An imperfection of a diamond.
- Mostly a blueish glow of a diamond in high ultraviolet lighting conditions. Ratings: none, faint, slight, medium, strong blue. Strong blue fluorescence may cause the diamond to appear milky in daylight.
- A crack on the diamond's surface. The fracture can be treated by filling. Detection only under special lighting with high magnification microscope.
